California summer heat is kicking in my friends and staying hydrated is more important than ever, especially for our seniors. Dehydration can easily sneak up on us and can often lead to serious health issues such as urinary tract infections (UTIs).
As temperatures rise, the risk of UTIs goes up too. Most seniors, especially women don’t often feel thirsty or simply want to avoid excessive trips to the bathroom. Regardless of the excuse, its crucial to keep sipping water throughout the day. If plain water isn’t appealing, try munching on fruits with high water content like watermelon, or enjoying a refreshing soda water.
I recall my mother’s major hospitalizations which were both results of dehydration and a severe UTI that went un-noticed. She was simply not a water drinker and her doctor just instructed me to find the one liquid that she enjoyed and give it for her. In her case it was ginger ale. It took many years and constant supervision to better manage her behavior but ultimately she was living in an assisted living where the care givers were paying attention to telltale signs and could oversee any subtle changes that needed to be addressed immediately.
There are other causes of UTIs such as poor hygiene, not changing disposable underwear frequently causing excess bacteria build up and even medications may cause dehydration as a side effect. Ultimately, its hydrate, hydrate, hydrate- at all ages.
Recognizing UTI Symptoms in Seniors
With UTIs becoming a growing risk with dehydration in the heat of the summer, we at Wellness on Wheels want to ensure you’re aware of some of the signs and symptoms to look for in seniors. Here are some signs to watch out for:
• Increased confusion or delirium
• Frequent urination or a strong urge to urinate
• Pain or burning sensation during urination
• Lower abdominal pain or discomfort
• Fever or chills
• Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling urine
• Sudden changes in behavior or appetite
To avoid UTIs, hydration is key! It doesn't have to be a challenge to get enough fluids, even for the most stubborn water avoider.
The Serious Risks of UTIs in Seniors
UTIs can lead to serious complications if not treated promptly. In seniors, UTIs can cause severe infections, leading to kidney damage or sepsis, a life-threatening response to infection. The cognitive changes associated with UTIs can also increase the risk of falls and injuries. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, UTIs are the most common cause of bacteremia in older adults, highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment.
Simple Tips to Stay Hydrated
To avoid UTIs, hydration is key! It doesn’t have to be a challenge to get enough fluids, even for the most stubborn water avoider. Here are a few tips to increase fluid intake and protect against dehydration:
• Drink small amounts of water regularly, aiming for at least 8 glasses a day.
• Incorporate water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and oranges into your diet.
• Set reminders with alarms or apps to drink water regularly.
• Keep an eye on your urine color—pale yellow usually means you’re well-hydrated, but darker urine might be a sign you need more fluids.
Staying Active Safely in Summer Heat
The dangers of extreme summer heat go beyond dehydration and UTIs. While drinking enough water is a key aspect of maintaining health in seniors during summer, staying fit and active is just as important! Exercise is vital for maintaining health, but it’s important to avoid overexertion in the summer heat. Moderate, simple exercises can keep seniors active without risking heat-related issues. Gentle stretching, early morning and evening walks, chair exercises, and tai chi are all fantastic ways to stay cool while getting a good workout. One beneficial and basic standing exercise that seniors can do at home is Standing Heel Raise.
Exercise Spotlight: Standing Heel Raises

1. Stand with feet hip-width apart: Use a sturdy chair or countertop for balance if needed.
2. Lift your heels: Rise onto your toes as high as comfortably possible.
3. Hold the position: Maintain the lift for a few seconds.
4. Lower your heels: Return to the starting position slowly.
5. Repeat: Perform 10-15 heel raises, focusing on controlled movements and keeping your balance.
Let’s stay hydrated, stay healthy, and make the most of this summer together!
Cheers.
Gigi
